Brief
The mountains are the most important tourist attraction in Austria. The project develops the idea of a museum presenting the history, the exploration, the biology, physical and climatic facts of the Austrian glaciers.

Design Intent
The visitor enters the building at the lowest level through an underground foyer, thus slowly climbing up the different exhibition platforms, stairs and ramps to the very top, where the restaurant is situated. A 180° viewing platform at the end of the exhibition offers an overwhelming panorama and invites the visitor to step outside for hiking.

Process
The site is located right in the middle of the picturesque Austrian Alps at the height of 2000m, offering a spectacular view to four different glaciers. The actual form and the materials of the building constitute an artificial appearance in the rough mountain area. The main volume, a glass cone, seems to slide off the slope imitating the slow but constant movement of a glacier. The access is provided by an existing funicular.
